Jewelry Care Guide

Preserve Your Precious Pieces

JEWELRY CARE GUIDE

Your Biovlia jewelry is crafted from precious metals and genuine gemstones. With proper care, your pieces will maintain their beauty for generations.

Follow these guidelines to keep your jewelry looking its best

Essentials

General Care Tips

Store Separately

Keep each piece in its own soft pouch or compartment to prevent scratching.

Put Jewelry On Last

Apply perfume, lotion, and hairspray before putting on your jewelry.

Remove Before Activities

Take off jewelry before swimming, exercising, cleaning, or sleeping.

Wipe After Wearing

Use a soft, lint-free cloth to remove oils and moisture after each wear.

Avoid Chemicals

Keep jewelry away from chlorine, bleach, and harsh cleaning products.

By Material

Care By Material

Au

Gold Jewelry Care

A durable precious metal that still requires gentle care to maintain its luster

Cleaning

Soak in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for 15-20 minutes. Gently scrub with a soft-bristle toothbrush, rinse, and pat dry.

Polishing

Use a gold polishing cloth to restore shine. Avoid abrasive materials.

Storage

Store in a tarnish-resistant pouch or lined jewelry box. Gold does not tarnish easily but can scratch from contact with harder materials.

Karat Guide

Higher karat gold is softer. 10K is most durable for daily wear, while 18K requires more careful handling.

Ag

Sterling Silver Care

Sterling silver (.925) may develop a natural patina over time — this is normal and can be easily addressed

Preventing Tarnish

Store in anti-tarnish bags or with silica gel packets. Wear your silver regularly — the oils from your skin actually help prevent tarnish.

Cleaning Tarnish

Use a silver polishing cloth or a mild silver cleaning solution. For heavier tarnish, make a paste of baking soda and water, apply gently, rinse, and dry thoroughly.

What to Avoid

Rubber, latex, and sulfur-containing materials accelerate tarnishing. Remove silver jewelry in hot springs or pools.

Gemstone Care

Each gemstone has unique properties that determine the best care approach

Hard Gemstones

Sapphire, Ruby, Topaz • Mohs 7–9

These durable stones can be cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft brush. They are relatively resistant to scratching but should still be stored separately.

Medium Gemstones

Amethyst, Citrine, Garnet, Peridot, Tourmaline, Aquamarine • Mohs 6.5–7

Clean with warm soapy water. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and sudden temperature changes. These stones can chip if struck hard.

Delicate Gemstones

Opal, Tanzanite, Morganite, Emerald

These stones require extra care. Clean only with a damp soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and harsh chemicals. Opals should be kept away from extreme heat and dryness. Emeralds are often treated with oil — avoid solvents.

Best Practices

Do's & Don'ts

Do

  • Store each piece in its own soft pouch or compartment
  • Wipe jewelry with a soft cloth after each wear
  • Put jewelry on last, after perfume and lotion
  • Have prongs inspected annually to ensure stones are secure
  • Wear silver regularly — skin oils help prevent tarnish
  • Get professional cleaning and inspection once a year

Don't

  • Swim, exercise, or clean while wearing jewelry
  • Expose jewelry to chlorine, bleach, or harsh chemicals
  • Use abrasive materials to polish gold or silver
  • Use ultrasonic cleaners on delicate gemstones like opal or emerald
  • Store silver near rubber, latex, or sulfur-containing materials
  • Wear rings during activities that could bend the band

Protection

Storage Tips

Separate Compartments

Use a lined jewelry box with individual slots to prevent pieces from scratching each other.

Cool & Dry

Store away from direct sunlight and humidity. Use silica gel packets to absorb excess moisture.

Anti-Tarnish Pouches

Use tarnish-resistant pouches or bags, especially for sterling silver pieces.

Travel Smart

Use a travel jewelry case with padded compartments. Learn more in our travel guide.

Special Attention

Ring Care

Remove rings before washing hands or using hand sanitizer

Have prongs inspected annually to ensure stones are secure

Avoid wearing rings during activities that could bend the band

Professional Maintenance

We recommend having your fine jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected once a year. A jeweler can check for loose stones, worn prongs, and other issues before they become problems.
