What Is Rhodium Plating? Everything You Need to Know

If you own white gold jewelry or sterling silver, you have likely heard of rhodium plating. This thin coating gives jewelry its brilliant, mirror-like shine. But what exactly is rhodium, and how does it affect your jewelry?

What Is Rhodium?

Rhodium is a rare precious metal in the platinum family. It is one of the rarest elements on Earth, far rarer than gold or platinum. Key properties:

  • Hardness: Significantly harder than gold or silver, providing excellent scratch resistance
  • Color: Naturally bright white with a mirror-like reflectivity
  • Tarnish-proof: Rhodium does not tarnish, corrode, or oxidize
  • Hypoallergenic: Safe for sensitive skin

Why Is White Gold Rhodium Plated?

White gold is not naturally white. It is made by alloying yellow gold with white metals like palladium or nickel. The result is a pale gold color with a slight yellow or grey tint. Rhodium plating provides:

  • The bright, pure white color that buyers expect
  • A harder surface that resists scratches better than the gold alloy underneath
  • A hypoallergenic barrier over any nickel in the alloy

How Long Does Rhodium Plating Last?

Rhodium plating wears off over time. How quickly depends on:

  • Wear frequency: Daily-wear rings may need replating every 1-2 years. Earrings and pendants last longer because they experience less friction
  • Skin chemistry: Acidic skin wears through plating faster
  • Contact with chemicals: Chlorine, perfumes, and cleaning products accelerate wear
  • Thickness: Quality plating (0.75-1.0 micron) lasts longer than thin plating (0.25 micron)

Signs Your Jewelry Needs Replating

  • Yellow or grey patches appearing on white gold
  • Loss of the mirror-like brightness
  • Visible color difference between worn and protected areas
  • Skin irritation if the base alloy contains nickel

Rhodium on Sterling Silver

Sterling silver can also be rhodium plated. The benefits:

  • No tarnishing: The rhodium barrier prevents the silver from oxidizing. Read more about silver tarnish prevention
  • Brighter shine: Rhodium reflects more light than polished silver
  • Longer wear: The harder surface resists daily wear better

The trade-off: once rhodium wears off, you will need to have it replated or accept the natural silver appearance.

Caring for Rhodium-Plated Jewelry

  • Clean gently with warm water and mild soap. Avoid abrasive cloths
  • Remove jewelry before swimming, cleaning, or exercising. See our care mistakes guide
  • Store separately in soft pouches. Learn more in our storage guide
  • Do not use polishing cloths designed for silver on rhodium-plated pieces. The mild abrasives can remove the plating

Replating Cost and Process

A jeweler can replate a ring for approximately $25-75, depending on size and condition. The process takes about 30-60 minutes. Most jewelers offer this service. For daily-wear pieces, investment for replating every 12-18 months.
