Understanding Gemstone Treatments: What Every Buyer Should Know

Most gemstones on the market today have undergone some form of treatment to enhance their color, clarity, or durability. Understanding these treatments helps you make informed purchasing decisions and appreciate the value of what you are buying.

Why Are Gemstones Treated?

Gemstone treatments have been practiced for centuries. The goal is to improve a stone's appearance by enhancing its natural beauty. Treated gemstones are not fake or synthetic — they are genuine stones that have been improved through various techniques.

Common Gemstone Treatments

Heat Treatment

The most common and widely accepted treatment. Heating stones to high temperatures permanently improves color and clarity. Nearly all sapphires, rubies, and tanzanites on the market are heat-treated. This treatment is considered standard industry practice and does not significantly affect value.

Irradiation

Used primarily on topaz to produce vivid blue colors (London Blue, Swiss Blue). The treatment is permanent and safe. Most blue topaz you see in jewelry stores has been irradiated.

Coating

A thin surface treatment that can enhance color. Common on mystic topaz which displays a rainbow effect. Coatings can wear off over time with regular wear, so handle coated stones with extra care.

Filling

Fracture filling uses glass, resin, or oil to improve clarity by filling surface-reaching fractures. Common in emeralds (oil treatment) and rubies (glass filling). Oil-treated emeralds are standard; glass-filled rubies should be priced lower than untreated stones.

Diffusion

Surface diffusion adds color to the outer layer of a stone using heat and chemicals. The color is only skin-deep and can be removed if the stone is recut or chipped.

What to Look For

  • Reputable sellers disclose all treatments clearly
  • Heat treatment is standard and accepted — no cause for concern
  • Untreated stones command premium prices but are rare
  • Ask about treatments before purchasing expensive stones
  • Certificates from GIA, IGI, or AGS include treatment information
