Pearl Jewelry Guide: Types, Quality, and Styling

Pearls are the only gemstones created by living organisms, and their natural luster has made them symbols of elegance and sophistication for thousands of years. Unlike mined gemstones that require cutting and polishing, pearls emerge from the shell with their beauty fully formed — a miracle of nature.

How Pearls Form

When an irritant enters a mollusk (oyster, mussel, or clam), the animal coats it with layers of nacre — a combination of aragonite crystals and conchiolin protein. This same substance lines the mollusk's shell. Layer upon layer of nacre builds up over months or years, creating a pearl. The quality of these nacre layers determines the pearl's luster, the most important quality factor.

Types of Pearls

Akoya Pearls

The classic pearl most people envision. Produced by Pinctada fucata oysters primarily in Japan and China. Akoya pearls are known for their exceptional luster — the sharpest, most mirror-like of any pearl type. Typically 6-8mm in diameter with round shapes. Colors range from white to cream, often with rose or silver overtones.

South Sea Pearls

The largest and among the most valuable pearls. Produced by Pinctada maxima oysters in Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Available in white/silver (Australia) and golden (Philippines, Indonesia) varieties. Typical sizes range from 9-16mm, with rare specimens exceeding 20mm. Known for their thick nacre and satiny luster.

Tahitian Pearls

Often called "black pearls," though they actually come in a remarkable range of dark colors — peacock green, aubergine purple, dark gray, and true black. Produced by Pinctada margaritifera oysters in French Polynesia. Sizes typically range from 8-14mm. The most exotic and dramatic pearl variety.

Freshwater Pearls

The most accessible and diverse pearl type. Produced by mussels in rivers and lakes, primarily in China. Available in an enormous range of shapes (round, baroque, button, coin, rice) and colors (white, pink, lavender, peach). Sizes range from tiny seed pearls to 15mm+ baroque specimens. Modern Chinese freshwater pearls have reached quality levels rivaling Akoyas.

Understanding Pearl Quality

Luster

The most important quality factor. High-luster pearls have a sharp, bright reflection that appears to come from deep within the pearl. You should be able to see your reflection in a fine pearl's surface. Low-luster pearls appear chalky or dull.

Surface Quality

Few pearls are completely blemish-free. Minor surface characteristics (small spots, bumps, wrinkles) are natural and acceptable. Heavy blemishing, pitting, or large spots significantly reduce value.

Shape

Round pearls are the rarest and most valued. Near-round, oval, button, and drop shapes are also desirable. Baroque (irregular) shapes have their own unique beauty and are prized for artistic jewelry designs.

Size

Larger pearls are rarer and more valuable. Even a 1mm increase in diameter can significantly affect price, especially in South Sea and Tahitian pearls.

Pearl Care — Essential Knowledge

Pearls are among the most delicate gemstones (2.5-4.5 Mohs) and require special care:

• Last on, first off: Put pearls on after applying perfume, hairspray, and cosmetics
• Wipe after wearing: A soft, damp cloth removes body oils and chemicals
• Never soak: Water can weaken the thread and damage nacre over time
• Store separately: Pearls scratch easily — keep in a soft cloth pouch
• Restring regularly: Pearl necklaces should be restrung every 1-2 years depending on wear
• Avoid chemicals: Acids, chlorine, vinegar, and even lemon juice damage nacre
