Jewelry for Sensitive Skin: A Complete Guide to Hypoallergenic Options

If your skin turns green, itches, or develops a rash from certain jewelry, you are not alone. Metal allergies affect roughly 10 to 15 percent of the population. The good news is that plenty of beautiful, high-quality options exist for sensitive skin.

What Causes Jewelry Allergies?

The most common culprit is nickel, a metal frequently used in jewelry alloys. When nickel comes into contact with sweat and moisture on the skin, it releases ions that trigger an allergic reaction known as contact dermatitis. Symptoms include redness, itching, blistering, and that telltale green discoloration.

Safe Metals for Sensitive Skin

Sterling Silver (.925)

Sterling silver is generally safe for most people with metal sensitivities. Look for pieces stamped .925, which indicates 92.5 percent pure silver. Some sterling silver alloys use germanium instead of copper, making them even more hypoallergenic. Argentium silver is an excellent choice for those extremely sensitive to metals.

14K and 18K Gold

Higher karat gold contains less alloy metals, reducing the chance of allergic reactions. 18K gold (75 percent pure gold) is the safest gold option. Avoid 10K gold if you have known metal sensitivities, as it contains a higher proportion of alloy metals including potential nickel.

Rose Gold

Rose gold is alloyed with copper rather than nickel, making it a generally safe choice. However, some people may react to copper. If you react to rose gold, try yellow gold instead.

Platinum and Palladium

These naturally hypoallergenic metals rarely cause reactions. They are excellent choices for engagement rings and pieces worn constantly. Learn more in our platinum guide.

Tips for Jewelry with Sensitive Skin

  • Always remove jewelry before swimming, showering, or exercising
  • Keep jewelry clean and dry to minimize reactions
  • Apply a thin layer of clear nail polish to the inside of rings as a barrier
  • Choose solid metals over plated jewelry, as plating wears off and exposes base metals
  • Buy from reputable sellers who clearly state the metal composition
  • When in doubt, choose sterling silver or 14K gold and above

Metals to Avoid

  • Nickel and nickel alloys
  • Brass (copper-zinc alloy)
  • Costume jewelry with unknown metal content
  • Very low karat gold (below 10K)
