Sterling silver is a beautiful and popular metal for fine jewelry, but it naturally tarnishes over time when exposed to air, moisture, and chemicals. The good news is that tarnish is completely reversible with simple at-home cleaning methods.
Why Does Silver Tarnish?
Tarnish is a chemical reaction between silver and sulfur compounds in the air. It appears as a dull, dark coating that dulls the metal's natural shine. Tarnishing is faster in humid environments, near rubber, and with exposure to perfume, lotion, or household chemicals.
Method 1: Gentle Soap and Water (Light Tarnish)
- Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water
- Soak the jewelry for 5-10 minutes
- Gently scrub with a soft toothbrush (focus on crevices)
- Rinse with clean water
- Pat dry with a lint-free cloth
This works for light tarnish and regular maintenance cleaning.
Method 2: Baking Soda Paste (Moderate Tarnish)
- Mix 3 parts baking soda with 1 part water to form a paste
- Apply with a soft cloth, rubbing gently in straight lines (not circles)
- Rinse thoroughly
- Buff dry with a clean cloth
Note: Do NOT use on silver with gemstones like pearls, opals, or turquoise as baking soda can damage softer stones.
Method 3: Aluminum Foil Bath (Heavy Tarnish)
- Line a bowl with aluminum foil, shiny side up
- Place the silver jewelry on the foil
- Sprinkle 1 tablespoon each of baking soda and salt
- Pour boiling water over the jewelry until covered
- Wait 3-5 minutes (you may see bubbling and smell sulfur)
- Remove, rinse, and dry
This electrochemical method reverses the tarnish reaction itself. Do NOT use this on jewelry with pearls or delicate gemstones.
Prevention Tips
- Store properly: Use anti-tarnish bags or pouches. Read our storage guide
- Wear it: The natural oils in your skin actually help prevent tarnish
- Remove before: Swimming, showering, applying lotion, cleaning, exercising
- Last on, first off: Put silver jewelry on after perfume and cosmetics
- Keep dry: Moisture accelerates tarnish. Dry thoroughly if it gets wet
What NOT to Do
- Never use toothpaste (too abrasive despite popular belief)
- Never use paper towels (microscopic fibers can scratch)
- Never use rubber gloves (rubber accelerates tarnish)
- Never use harsh chemicals (bleach, ammonia, acetone)
When to Get Professional Cleaning
For heavily tarnished antique or intricate pieces, or jewelry with delicate emeralds, tanzanite, or opals, professional cleaning is recommended. Also consider professional polishing annually for frequently worn pieces.
