Complete Ring Sizing Guide: How to Measure at Home

Getting the right ring size is crucial for comfort and security. A ring that is too loose risks falling off and being lost. A ring that is too tight is uncomfortable and difficult to remove. This guide shows you how to measure accurately at home.

Method 1: Measure an Existing Ring

If you already own a ring that fits well on the intended finger:

  1. Place the ring on a flat surface
  2. Measure the inside diameter in millimeters
  3. Compare to the size chart below

Method 2: String or Paper Strip

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper or use a piece of string
  2. Wrap it snugly around the base of your finger
  3. Mark where it overlaps
  4. Measure the length in millimeters
  5. This is your circumference. Divide by 3.14 to get the diameter

US Ring Size Chart

  • Size 4 — 14.9mm diameter / 46.8mm circumference
  • Size 5 — 15.7mm / 49.3mm
  • Size 6 — 16.5mm / 51.8mm
  • Size 7 — 17.3mm / 54.4mm
  • Size 8 — 18.1mm / 57.0mm
  • Size 9 — 18.9mm / 59.5mm
  • Size 10 — 19.8mm / 62.1mm
  • Size 11 — 20.6mm / 64.6mm
  • Size 12 — 21.4mm / 67.2mm

Tips for Accurate Measurement

  • Measure at the end of the day — Fingers swell slightly throughout the day
  • Measure multiple times — Take 3 measurements and use the average
  • Consider the band width — Wide bands (6mm+) need a slightly larger size than thin bands
  • Temperature matters — Cold hands are smaller. Warm hands are larger. Measure at room temperature
  • Dominant hand is slightly larger — Measure the specific finger on the specific hand you will wear the ring on

Ring Styles and Sizing

Different ring styles may fit differently:

  • Eternity rings (full) are harder to resize due to continuous gemstones. Get the size right the first time
  • Stackable rings — If stacking 3+ rings, go up half a size for comfort
  • Solitaire rings with thin bands may spin on the finger if too loose
  • Cocktail rings with large tops may fit tighter due to the weight pulling downward

When in Doubt

If you are between sizes, go UP half a size. A slightly loose ring is more comfortable and safer than a tight one. You can always add a ring size adjuster for a snugger fit. For more details, see our ring stacking and layering tips.
